Step/Week 7, Day 3 – Victory: Change Your Mind

“Don’t copy the behavio[u]r and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy you” (Rom. 12:2, TLB).

When at the height of your addictions, your every waking thought and even, your dreams and nightmares were focussed on one thing: ensuring you got your next drink, hit, fix. Your addictions were probably all-consuming, as your behaviour and thinking patterns were totally preoccupied with maintaining your addictive status.

Now that you are walking the road towards your recovery at this point in your life, you need not only to allow God to change your character defects, but you need to let Him completely change your way of thinking. Recovery should be your prime thought and focus from now on. Working alongside God should be your daily motivation.

The verse for today provides you with a warning and a promise. You need to be mindful of the influence the world around you has on your addictions. As God does His work in your life, you need to realise that you are a “new person” in Him. He will be beginning to change the way you do things and the way you think about things. He will bring those areas of your life to conform with His ways and teachings. You will start to see a new perspective, full of daily opportunities, developing.

As you become further aware of your character defects and shortcomings being removed, you will learn what it means to be satisfied by God’s ways and intervention in your life. You no longer have to rely on your “old ways” of getting satisfaction from your addictions, you can now derive your satisfaction from God, a real, authentic satisfaction, as He walks beside you on the path that leads to freedom and recovery.

Personal Reflection: Do you believe that God can change the way you think and behave? Be prepared to be amazed at the changes God can do in your life. When you become aware of these changes, praise Him for all He is doing!
