Life Recovery Devotions StepWeek 7 Day 5 – Victory One Day at a Time. Take it Easy

“So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time” (Matt. 6:34, TLB).

You have probably been on a very painful journey battling your addictions. You may have been in the vice-like grip of your addictions for many years now. You are tired. You are anxious. You like to worry about the “what ifs”.

Jesus has wonderful advice and a promise in our verse for today on how you are to live your life from now on. You are not to be anxious; don’t worry—it will sap your energy and make you even more irritable, and these are two things (lack of energy and irritability) you don’t want in your life, whilst on the road to recovery. I hear you! “It so hard not to worry!” I agree (to some extent) but when Jesus says something that we shouldn’t do, you can be sure He will provide you with the strength, wisdom, grace that you’ll need to accomplish it. Put your trust in Him to help you not be anxious.

Today is what God has given you—just today. Tomorrow may come, but you’ll only know that when you’re living in it, so Jesus’ advice of living for today is sound and beneficial for the recovering addict. Today might have enough problems of its own without you worrying about tomorrow and the “what ifs”. God will help you through this day that He has given to you as a gift—it’s a day closer to your complete recovery.

And here’s the promise: God will not only take care of you today, but He will take care of your tomorrow, too. You don’t have to worry about tomorrow, God has already got you covered. You can concentrate fully on this day and on what God wants to do in your life. “Live one day at a time”—you know it makes complete sense!

Personal Reflection: Take a moment to thank God for this new day. Make this a habit in your life. Being grateful is an excellent character trait to cultivate. If you’re feeling anxious, ask God to take away your anxiousness and fill you with His peace. Trust Him!
