Life Recovery Devotions StepWeek 4 Day 1 – Moral Inventory and Sponsor Coming Clean

“Let us examine ourselves instead, and let us repent and turn again to the Lord” (Lam. 3:40, TLB).

Like me, before coming clean, you’ve probably been hiding from a few home truths about yourselves. Examining yourself requires going deep into the dark areas of your life. You need to be fearless. It’s time to get clean!

You’ll need a sponsor to help you navigate this process, but if you haven’t got one or can’t find one, don’t let this put you off. The important thing is for you to want to repent of your sins. Take some time and prayer, in asking God to show you the person who could be your sponsor. (There will be a little more about picking the right person in the personal testimony section shared at the end of the week.) This person as well as God will journey with you as you make your moral inventory.

This probably is not going to be an easy process for you. It wasn’t for me! Through our hurts, hang-ups and habits we’ve avoided the truth at all costs, especially about ourselves. But this moral inventory needs your total and brutal honesty. It also needs you to be balanced in recalling both positive and negatives things about yourself.

Don’t rush this process, take your time and let God guide you as you recall your journey up to the present day. It’s essential that you’re as thorough as you can. You’re going to need to ask yourself some tough questions and your truthful answers might be hard for you to accept. But stick with this. Both God (most important) and your sponsor (if you have one) will support you all the way through, as you confess your sins. But more about that shortly.

Personal Reflection: What things in the past are you ashamed of? Who are the people who have hurt you? Who have you hurt? Can you see the importance of making a moral inventory? Will you start the process of finding a sponsor and making your moral inventory? Do you want to be clean? Do you want to experience the freedom that God’s forgiveness can bring?
