Life Recovery Devotions StepWeek 11 Day 1 – Relapse and Gratitude Your Spiritual Food

“For the Scriptures tell us that bread won’t feed men’s souls: obedience to every word of God is what we need” (Matt. 4:4, TLB).

This week you will read about the topics of relapse (how to prevent it) and developing your gratitude. Relapse is a very real possibility, even during the recovery process. You need to be fully aware of this. I relapsed so many times during my journey to full recovery that I’ve forgotten the number of times. Yet, I came out of the other end and I now have many years of sobriety behind me with no relapses, but I’m fully aware that the possibility of relapse can happen at any time, if I neglect my part in sustaining my recovery.

You need to realise that you are going to be tempted during the recovery process and after you’ve fully recovered from your addictions. Today’s verse is taken from the account of the temptations Jesus experienced in the wilderness. This happened directly after His baptism, as He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus knew the reality of being tempted, yet, He did not succumb to any temptation—He remained completely sinless.

His words show you the importance of receiving your daily spiritual food, just as you need physical food for your body. Without physical food, you will starve, and the same applies to spiritual food; without it, you will be in danger of possibly relapsing, because you’ve distanced yourself from God’s Word.

Take Jesus as your example and be obedient to God’s Word. Remember to engage with the Bible each day. Seek His Word to fulfill your spiritual needs, as you journey on the road to recovery.
