And Abraham said to God, ‘If only Ishmael may live under your blessing.
Genesis 17:18
God had promised Abraham that his wife Sara would bear him a son. Tired of waiting for the fulfilment of God’s word, Abraham took matters into his own hands and produced Ishmael through union with Sara’s handmaid. Then the patriarch called on God to adjust his intentions in accord with what he had done himself. Far too many prayers are prayed in the hope that God will conform to human ideas; that he will bow to our wisdom and yield to our attempts to follow our lead. How patient, good and kind of God not to answer our petitions to our liking.
