If the man is poor, do not go to sleep with his pledge in your possession. Return his cloak to him by sunset so that he may sleep in it . . .

Consider the subtleties of morality according to Scripture. There are men whose social security is so delicately poised that they are obliged to borrow, and there are those who are materially secure enough to lend. It may be legitimate for a lender to require a pledge in order to secure his assets. But what if the borrower has to mortgage the coat in which he warms himself? In such a case the weight of indebtedness rests not on the borrower but on him he provided the loan. The physical well-being of the poor man has greater moral pull than the lender’s financial security. How might this principle be put to work in business and commerce today?
