Cheap Grace Isn’t Enough

The only grace that can save me is the grace that’s free.

Christians talk a lot about grace. It’s a core part of how they see the world.

I’ve heard some people use the phrase, “cheap grace.” What they mean is that we shouldn’t “cheapen” the grace of God by thinking it’s too freely available. They tend to think that God only shows grace when we contribute with our own efforts.

I don’t believe in “cheap grace.” I believe in the costly grace of God, a grace that’s so far above my ability to earn or to deserve, as the stars are from the earth. Because it cost the life of the Son of God at Calvary.

All of us, in and of ourselves, are helpless and lost in sin. Unless we depend entirely on God’s mercy, there is no hope. You see, cheap grace is not enough for me. The only grace that can save me is the grace that’s free.
